7 ways to avoid a traffic accident

More than 90 percent of automobile accidents are preventable. The following eight of those cases where you can completely avoid collisions with a little common sense and caution.

1. Intersection errors. According to the Federal Highway Administration, intersection and intersection-related accidents account for about 23 percent of all fatalities and more than half of all fatal and injury accidents occur at intersections. Look around you carefully and always proceed with caution in an intersection, even if you have a right of passage.

2. Inattention. Pay attention to your own driving, other drivers, pedestrians and driving conditions.

3. Following too closely. Most rear-end accidents are caused by tailgating, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Maintain a 3 second following distance from the car in front of you, except in hazardous weather conditions where you have to maintain a 4 - or 5-car distance.

4. Malfunction of vehicles. Have regular reviews, particularly liquid wipers, brakes and tires, and replace the blades wiper whenever they are worn.

5. The roads dangerous. Ice (which tends to grow more often on bridges, viaducts, shady, and intersections), snow, fog, rain and circumstances require a slower speed and greater caution.

6. Speed dangerous. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "the economic cost of speeding-related accidents is estimated at 40.4 billion dollars each year." Excess speed reduces reaction time and increases the impact and injuries.

7. A bad lane change. Before you change, check all mirrors, and signal before changing. Also, look for other vehicles.
